Tai O Village, Hong Kong – As someone who’s been to Hong Kong more than once, I’ve been to places that other people know. And yet, I’m sure there are still some more underrated Hong Kong places that people have yet to know – like Tai O Village.

Tai O Fishing Village Hong Kong

It was 2 PM when we hopped on the bus, and after an hour, about 3 PM, we arrived at the terminal. From there, it was just a short walk to reach Tai O Fishing Village.

Boat tours

You won’t know what to expect upon arriving at the terminal. Because all you’ll see is a pier where you can ride boat tours. The ferry could bring you to Sha Lo Wan, Tung Chung, and Tuen Mun. Not sure though how long the ride would be.

Tai O Specialty Market

To get to Tai Chung Bridge, you’re gonna have to pass by lots of dried sea creatures – and they weren’t joking when they call it sea creatures. Because not only you’ll see fishes, shrimps, and octopuses, but even starfishes, pufferfish, and even fish stomach.

Fish Mau (or stomach)

So, get ready to arouse your sense of smell with all the fishy smells around!

Tai Chung Bridge

See the blue bridge? That’s Tai Chung Bridge.

Not for long, you’ll soon reach the end of the road, which will lead you to the bridge that you’re looking for. Tai Chung Bridge is a great photo op spot, so make sure to take lots of great photos there!

Sightseeing Boat

There are lots of boats in the area, and you’ll soon find someone waiting patiently for customers to come. And that person is where you can get tickets for the sightseeing boat. However, you can always get discounts when you book here.

The sightseeing boat is about 20 minutes, so you just enjoy the traditional houses to see and feel how the locals spend their day away from the buzzling city noise.

Shops and Restaurants

So many great things await you when you go to Tai O Village.

We even saw a place where to make shrimp paste (aka bagoong here in the Philippines), and the locals make it as a flavoring in their dishes. I haven’t tried their version, though, so I can’t say whether you should buy it or not.

But, if you’re an adventurous person, or someone who loves to explore in cooking, better to buy a bottle for yourself! Just be careful and pack it properly, else, you risk your clothes smelling shrimp!

We also saw egg yolks being dried out in the sun, and I was almost tempted to get them!

Murals

Another thing I like to commend in Tai O Village is the murals we found almost everywhere! We liked that the decorations added charm. And it seems just like what we saw when we went to Lei Yue Mun Fishing Village!

Tai O Public Library

We didn’t expect we’d be visiting Tai O Fishing Village, because a relative just brought us there. So, I didn’t know there’s a library there, therefore, I wasn’t able to take a photo.

Tai O opening hours: 10 AM to 6 PM

Tai O Heritage Hotel

Previously Tai O Police Station, this secluded hotel boasts a nice view. Apart from that, we were amazed by the unique elevator type it has. Not going up and down vertically, rather, it brings you up diagonally – feeling like a wizard in Harry Potty, IYKYK. Haha

During our visit, there weren’t many people staying in the area, but maybe they were just out and about exploring the place. So, if you have plans on staying, don’t be afraid, because Tai O Heritage Hotel looks neat!

Don’t forget to use these codes for discounts!

Tai O Fishing Village how to get there

I’m sure there are many ways to get to Tai O – could be by bus or taxi. And you can even rent a car to get there. But what we did was ride the bus from Tung Chung Bus Terminal. From there, we looked for the sign that says to Tai O, that’s number 11.

The ride was roughly an hour, and we even fell asleep during the travel. So, be prepared when going there, go to the washroom, prepare whatever you need before riding the bus.

Tai O Fishing Village reviews conclusion

Is Tai O worth visiting? For some it may not be, but for me, it was a nice deviation from what we usually see here in Hong Kong. I like that they have a slower pace of life than when in the city.

And this is one of those unusual Hong Kong places to visit if you want a different view. So, if you’re looking for what to do in Hong Kong for a day, why not visit Tai O Village and see a different vibe?
