How to go to Marine World Uminonakamichi
If you want to find Marine World, Fukuoka map is not really needed especially if you have access to Google maps and a trusty pocket wifi (here’s where we got ours).
When going from Hakata station to Marine World, the train is all you need to easily reach Marine World Fukuoka Japan.
Ride the JR Kashii Line train bound for Saitozaki, then get off at Uminonakamichi station.

Once you’re out, there’s only one way to go, and follow where the crowd is going, and they will lead you to Marine World Fukuoka. Watch my YouTube video for the exact path to take here.
From a normal walking pace, you’ll reach Uminonakamichi Aquarium in about 10 minutes (I’m not sure how hot it can be during summer, but if you go there before spring, you won’t feel the heat too much because of the cool breeze).
Marine World Uminonakamichi best time to visit

For me, the best time to visit theme parks and aquariums is early in the morning when the crowd has not yet piled up. And since Marine World Fukuoka opening hours is from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, we left home at about 9:30 AM – because we have a child and senior with us.
After traveling for about 55 minutes, we finally arrived outside the Marine aquarium Fukuoka.
Marine World Uminonakamichi opening hours: 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM
Marine World Fukuoka ferry
I have read that riding the ferry going to Marine World Fukuoka tour is one of the best way to get there. However, it will take each person 1,200 JPY (463.94 Php or 8.04 USD) for one way, so we’re okay with riding the train. Haha
Uminonakamichi main attraction
At the main entrance of the Uminonakamichi Marine World, you’ll be greeted by a huge glass panel with a waterfall-like effect. In front of the glass is a souvenir shop, called Sea Forest, where you can shop for many cute sea animal stuff.

I didn’t want to break my bank, so I skipped the place and proceeded with the first part of the Fukuoka aquarium – Hone no oto. Inside, you’ll see various skeletons from small to large fishes found in Fukuoka.

You’ll also see the first female megamouth shark found in the world. It’s said that the creature was found in Hakata Bay, Fukuoka.
Open ocean of Kyushu

We moved on to the next attraction on the 1st floor and saw a large aquarium that imitates an open ocean of Kyushu. Various fishes – sharks, stingrays, sardines, and lots of fishes are inside.
And we were lucky to get there at the right time.

It was only a few minutes before sardine feeding time, so we decided to stay there to witness a show unlike any other aquariums. And when it was time, you’ll see sardines swarming near the 7-meter deep aquarium walls, finding something to eat.

The synchronized swimming pattern of sardines was very fun to look at. Added to that, the exciting music is making me more excited. (Watch them in my YouTube post here!)
Show pool

The next place we went to was the show pool where the Marine World Fukuoka dolphin show is held. Despite not being crowded, Uminonakamichi Aquarium is one of Fukuoka places to visit, especially for locals. You’ll see why below.

Out in the show pool, it’ll be hard for you to find a place to sit.
So, if you want to watch cute sealion and dolphin shows, better to take note of the show schedule and be there ahead of time to secure good seats.

Marine World Fukuoka dolphin show lasts about 30 minutes.
Amami Coral reef

Crabs, squids, turtles (or tortoises), and many colorful corals are housed in Amami Coral reef.

At the end, you’ll even find small glass aquariums (or shall I say terrariums?) where reptiles and other kinds of animals are found. There are also some shellfish and starfish in the next part, so you and your children won’t get bored.

I’m fascinated by the different species of crab I saw that resemble one cartoon.
Sea otter pool

After all that colorful corals and fishes, we were saddened that the sea otter was not found in its pool. Instead, a sealion was relaxing while floating in water. The last sea otter, named Lilo, died on January 4, 2025.

Since then, Marine World Uminonakamichi decided not to adopt new otters because her death also meant the end of the otter exhibit in the Fukuoka aquarium.
We went back inside the large aquarium and saw that there was another show to be held.

After waiting for a few minutes, a diver went inside the giant aquarium. And even though he was talking nihongo, I knew he was explaining what we’d see inside. He went into some deep parts of the Fukuoka aquarium – where our eyes couldn’t see – and started exploring them.

He touched some of the fishes – of course, he knew which ones are safe to touch, which aren’t – then showed them to us.

With him is a waterproof camera so he can project what he’s seeing inside through the screen beside us. Sadly, there weren’t translations in English, so we didn’t understood most of what he’s saying.
But I find that it was a nice tool to help children who go there for field trip learn more about the fishes of the sea.
Sea animal island
We moved on to the next section, the Sea Animal Island, which showcased penguins and sealions.

Out in the cold (it was 8 degrees Celsius that time), we enjoyed watching penguins playing around their play area. The place was definitely great for them because they aren’t afraid of the cold, nor do they hibernate in low temperatures.
We even witnessed some penguins grouping and talking with one another. Surely, Marine World is one Fukuoka places to see if you have children because just like the penguin station, it features many different animals we didn’t find in other aquariums.
Beside where the penguins reside, is a covered area, and upon entering, you’ll feel like you entered an igloo. But actually, it’s just an ordinary wall painted white to imitate snow. And inside, you’ll see glasses with water and that’s where you’ll see sealions swimming on and about.

Thankfully, the place had a heater, so if you stayed too long outside watching penguins, you could warm up here.
Marine World Fukuoka restaurant

The next part we went is where Marine World Fukuoka restaurant is, Reilly Restaurant.

After quite a while of exploring the majestic Marine World Uminonakamichi, you can finally fill your hungry stomach with some good food. While food is not included in the Marine World Uminonakamichi entrance fee, you can still enjoy eating while watching Marine World’s animal performers.

The price of food isn’t that pricey – especially if you have a stunning view in front of you. Check out the price below.

And then if you still want to enjoy the large animal aquarium after eating, you can put your child in the mini play area, which is just right beside the Fukuoka sea aquarium restaurant.
